To re-read or not? That is the question!
You can probably see from the creases in the spines of these books, that they’ve been handled a lot. I mean, a lot!
I’m not sure how many times I’ve re-read Jillaroo, but it might be close to five. The Michael Connelly 3-in1 book, hmm, maybe six or seven. Patrica Cornwell? Probably more.
I always find I pick up different things each time I read a book.
The trouble is with re-reading (well what I find anyway) is that it puts the books in the to-be-read pile back a few days! And that pile is always growing.
Sometimes I wonder if I’ve got time to reread old favourites, but instead of putting aside the books I know I love to read, I’ve become more critical of the news ones I’m reading. If I get half way in and I’m not enjoying the book, I’ll put it down. If I think I’ve worked out “who’s done it”, then I’ll read the final chapter and see if I’m right. (I know, I know there will people putting their heads in the their hands, saying ‘Fleur!’ in the same tone mum used when I’d done something wrong!)
Anyhow, if I’m right about the ending, I’ll put the book down, without reading the rest. If I’m not, I’ll go back and finish reading it.
It might sound harsh, but it makes time for me to be able to reread my old favourites!
Are you a re-reader or not?
Oh Fleur, how could you read the ending then not read the entire book I may not like a page or two but if I had stopped reading I would have missed out on the book improving and becoming a firm favourite. I must admit if I read at least 3-4 chapters and simply cannot go on reading it I send it to the Op-shop.I must confess I did look at the back to see if the story ended how I wanted it to……when I was very young about nine or ten but I still read the book. I couldn’t put a book down because I read anything I could find. I even read “Onionhead” when I was only twelve, it whas when Peyton Place ( the book) was ‘ such a terrible book——–shouldn’t have been printed) Onionhead was much worse, I bought it at the threepenny book shop.( oh how I loved that shop books to the ceiling in rows so close together ,that shop was food to my brain and I was never starved there.I came from a family of eight children and loved it.I was the only one with such an avid love of reading. AND I Love re-reading again & again — although I have a waiting list of new books to be read— about 70 books as I buy every book of my favourite Authors plus many others I can’t leave behind once I read the back cover, they are the ones that go backwards on the piles of books because I read my favourite Authors first and you are in the Top Ten ultra-favourites. I must go back to bed and my sleeping husband as extreme tiredness especially my poor eyes are all saying good morning & good-night .??? Marion ????????
